Cruelty-Free Perfume Brands at Sephora:
- 7 Virtues, The – 100% vegan

Brands that are NOT Cruelty-Free at Sephora:
Sephora does carry a lot of cruelty-free brands. For those who shop there, I think that it is important for them to know which brands are the best to support. Unfortunately, the house line of cosmetics sold at Sephora is not cruelty-free. Sephora does have stores in China, where animal testing is required by law. Their house brand is sold in these stores.
I know that because of this, some people want to avoid shopping at Sephora altogether. For those who decide to not purchase items from Sephora, you can always go into the store to look at the cruelty-free brands and cruelty-free products in person, take home samples, and then order online directly from the brand itself or from Ulta.
Sadly, the list of brands that are not cruelty-free at Sephora is long. This is not a full list of the brands that are NOT cruelty-free at Sephora. It’s just ones that I get asked about a lot. Or brands that people tend to think are cruelty-free but actually are not. Go to the brands that are not cruelty-free list to view other brands that test on animals.
If you are looking to purchase only cruelty-free brands at Sephora, you should avoid the following brands:
- Benefit Cosmetics
- Bobbi Brown
- Caudalie
- Chanel
- Clarins
- Clinique
- Dior
- Estee Lauder
- Glamglow
- Gucci
- Kiehl’s
- L’Occitane
- La Mer
- Laura Mercier
- Makeup Forever
- Marc Jacobs Fragrances
- NARS
- Origins
- Sephora Collection

Hey Tashina!

Thanks!!

When a company, like Too Faced or Tarte is bought out by parent companies who test on animals, does it change their practices in animal testing? I’m new to the Cruelty Free world and I am trying to understand the Parent company thing. Or is it because the money goes into funding the animal testing of their other brands?
Thanks.
Hi Ashley,
It depends. In the examples of Too Faced and Tarte, their policies and practices did not change. They are still cruelty-free. When some brands are purchased, their policies do change. It can be different for each company.
Hi there,
What exactly does it mean when a company states they only test on animals when it is “required by law”?
Thanks!
It could be a couple of things – that they use ingredients that are required to be tested, are creating formulations that are required to be tested, or are selling in markets that require testing on the finished products.
I recently heard that Kat Von D is now 100% vegan because Kat herself is vegan. Do you have any information on that?? Thanks for putting this list together!
The Kat Von D beauty line isn’t yet 100% vegan. You can see a list of the vegan options here – http://www.katvondbeauty.com/shop-all-products/veganalert
Hi, sadly First Aid Beauty is no longer cf 🙁
They are. Nothing has changed about their policies or practices. 🙂
I saw that they no longer guarantee that their suppliers are cruelty-free–so they don’t personally test but they don’t ensure that their ingredients haven’t been tested on animals. They’ve been really quiet on it so it hasn’t gotten a lot of attention.
Hi Erin,
I talked to them about this specifically and they have assured me nothing about their stance or requirements of their suppliers have changed. They do still require that their ingredient suppliers be cruelty-free. I’ve given them feedback on the customer service response a few people have received and let them know it’s confusing.
Just wanna let you know Rosebud Perfume Co. isn’t listed on the main CF list- only it only says Rosebud company I think which confused me. Just thought the feedback would help. Much love and light 🙂 <3 Thank you for this amazing list, will share.
Thanks for posting this! I’ve noticed on other cruelty free blogs that marc jacobs beauty and kate somerville are listed as cruelty free but aren’t on here. Any info on these brands would be helpful.
Hi Michelle,
Marc Jacobs Beauty is on the Brands to Avoid list. They have told myself and other cruelty-free bloggers (Phyrra and My Beauty Bunny) that the ingredients they use may be tested on animals. They have also told me that they test when required by law. I don’t think I have reached out to Kate Somerville before, but I’ll do that now!
Thanks for answering my question, just frustrating because another popular cruelty free blog says that marc jacobs is. Think its the only one that states that, I trust you though and really appreciate all the time and effort you put into this blog.
Hi Tashina,
I’m confused because Marc Jacobs Beauty is on the list on this page?
They have worked with us to update their status since that comment was originally published. You can read more here – Is Marc Jacobs Beauty Cruelty-Free?

Dr. Perricone’s website states that they sell to China. Great post, btw…so helpful!!
Hi Louise,
While they do ship products directly to consumers there through the mail, they don’t have distributors, sell in stores in China, or sell in registered business in China like Sephora that would require them to test on animals. So thankfully they are still cruelty-free! 🙂
Wow, that’s so confusing! I did not interpret it like that when I read the info on their website. Thanks so much for the clarification. You rock, Tashina!
Thank you so much, this is a fab post & your blog is gonna be an unreal help!
