With so many locations, Target is a chain that is easily accessible to a lot of people. You can order from them online and have it shipped to your home, or brought to you through a delivery service. Target also carries cruelty-free brands at a variety of price points too. Because they carry such a huge variety of products, this cruelty-free list is also able to extend beyond the beauty section of the store. It covers makeup, skincare, haircare, and even household products too.

This is the most recent update of a post I originally published on November 5, 2014. It was last updated on April 29, 2020.
All of the brands listed here are the cruelty-free brands at Target. They are free of animal testing and they all also have vegan options. Just as with the Cruelty-Free Brand List, it is noted next to a brand if they are cruelty-free but are owned by a company that tests on animals. It is also noted if they are not just cruelty-free, but are also a 100% vegan brand.

To make this list easier to shop, and as requested by readers, I have split it up into categories by product type. Some brands may appear in multiple categories. For example, many brands that make skincare also make hair products too. Hopefully this helps make your cruelty-free shopping at Target easier!

Unfortunately, Target also carries a lot of brands that are not cruelty-free. Some of these brands even claim to be cruelty-free on product pages on the Target website. Some examples of this are L’Oreal, Aveeno, Aussie, Batiste, Herbal Essences, Maui Moisture, OGX, Simple, Sally Hansen, Wet n Wild, Physicians Formula, and Love Beauty and Planet. Sadly, Target’s own house line Up & Up is not cruelty-free either.

Target is has added search filters to their online store, including “cruelty free” claims. They have OGX listed as cruelty free.

I think it is so awesome that Target is trying to educate consumers, and make it easier for people to search their site, but I’m now I’m confused about OGX’s status.
I agree that it’s great when stores try to help educate their customers, but it’s also frustrating because it’s often not accurate. Sephora and other stores do this too and so many brands that aren’t cruelty-free get labeled as cruelty-free. It’s just because the brand claims to be. There are no checks and nothing done to ensure it’s accurate. So it’s a great step, but I wish they were more strict.
Hi, first of all thank you for the lists or cruelty free and vegan products! I often visit your page and social media accounts for info. I was wondering if you knew anything about the good chemistry brand? It’s a brand of fragrances from target. I believe they’re target created and claim to be vegan, non toxic and cruelty free, but I wanted to be 100%. I’ve seen other things online claiming the same, but I didn’t see this on this page.

I have a few products from Shea Moisture, the label and their website say they’re cruelty free. I read the ingredients before purchasing anything and many of the products appear to be vegan. I saw a post in the comments asking about the brand in 2015, your response states that you did reach out to them and they were added to the pending list. Did you ever hear back from them? Getting ready to go Lush and Target today to stock up on some items. I will be avoiding the brand today since I don’t see it on here, but would like to know the status. On my list, Sonia Kashuk is only listed as cruelty-free with vegan options. They are not a vegan brand but do make some vegan products. I hope this helps!
Hey, Tashina! I was digging through the post-Black Friday disaster area that is my local Target, trying to find some CF exfoliating facial wipes: Pacifica, Nip + Fab, or Alba, for example, but NOTHING was in stock. My mom apparently went there for something else later on, and brought me a package of the Target Up & Up brand cucumber exfoliating wipes. I was, of course, concerned that they weren’t CF, but I wasn’t going to say anything to my mom since she was so nice to pick them up for me. I noticed on the back of the package that they claim to not test on animals, but there was no certification. I did drop the company an email, and they confirmed that the Up & Up brands are not tested on animals, but…

I haven’t been able to receive clear enough confirmation from them. With a lot of store brands, they are private labeled products. So they are just re-branded products that other brands make. I think this makes it especially tricky because most store brands aren’t making the products themselves.
Exactly. I have a cruelty free app on my cell and check everything. I believe the Up & Up dryer sheets came up CF, but most other UP & Up products come up ‘CF status unknown’. I know that means this has been private labeled, but I don’t take a chance. Not worth it with so many options available. No one seems to have mentioned this but the cleaning product Bar Keepers Friend (like Comet, Ajax) is CF, so glad because it just happens to be my favorite cleaner. Available almost everywhere.

Hi, I spoke to a Target Beauty Concierge and they stated that the up&up brand is not vegan nor cruelty free, sadly.
Hi can u tell me why Stella McCartney are not cruelty free, ive read so many different things and am in the middle of discussion on a vegan page. I presume the fact that P&G make them is one reason although I see u include Toms of Maine on yr.
