The Ultimate Guide to Cruelty-Free Essential Oils

The Ultimate Guide to Cruelty-Free Essential Oils
Many Logical Harmony readers ask for help finding cruelty-free essential oils. For many people who transition to a cruelty-free beauty routine, switching to cruelty-free essential oils is often something that is far from peoples minds. People are most often focused on ensuring they are finding cruelty-free swaps for their foundations, mascaras, makeup brushes, and other beauty products before looking at products they may also use around the home. A lot of people do use essential oils as a part of their cruelty-free beauty routine too.

That’s why I decided to create this guide to cruelty-free essential oils. By nature, essential oils are usually not only cruelty-free but also vegan-friendly as they are a highly concentrated version of the oils found in plants. However, not all brands who make essential oils are cruelty-free. This guide makes it easy to ensure you are shopping for essential oils from cruelty-free brands!

Some popular cruelty-free essential oils & essential oil accessories are:

This is the most recent update of a post I originally published on October 7, 2017.

If you are new to essential oils, spend some time researching them before introducing them into your home or beauty routine. Certain oils need to be mixed with a carrier oil, such as coconut oil or Vitamin E oil, to be used on the skin. Others can be applied without being diluted. I would advise against using essential oils internally.

Some essential oils may also be potentially irritating to pets or children. I suggest using them minimally and in areas that are well ventilated for this reason.

A lot of companies who sell essential oils have a lot of information on their websites but it may be helpful to pick up a book too.

To learn more about essential oils and how to use them, pick up the following books:

  • Essential Oils for Beginners: The Guide to Get Started with Essential Oils and Aromatherapy
  • Modern Essentials: The Complete Guide to the Therapeutic Use of Essential Oils
  • The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy

What brands make Cruelty-Free Essential Oils?

The following brands are all cruelty-free and offer essential oils. While they are cruelty-free, some of these brands offer other products that are not vegan. This list will be kept as up to date as possible but brands may change their ingredient source or may not have all vegan products. Be sure to read ingredients before purchasing. Brands that are 100% vegan are noted.

  • Art Naturals
  • Aura Cacia
  • Blissoma
  • Brandless
  • EO Products
  • Everyone
  • Heritage Store
  • Little Moon Essentials
  • Mountain Rose Herbs
  • Now Products

A post on cruelty free and vegan scented waxes, like those used in warmers, would be amazing. I haven’t been able to find anything about Scentsy being cruelty free, nor any other big brands making them. I know a lot of indie brands make scented wax cubes, and indies are often cruelty free, but I’d love a definitive list.

I’m just seeing this, I reached out to them and per my email conversation with them they use mink oil in the face care products, when I asked if it was synthetic mink oil she stated no, but then tried to say maybe. YL is pretty tight lipped about that ingredient.

Hello – I was curious if you have any info about Young Living. I know they were using mink oil for awhile, but stopped after Peta put pressure on them. They seem vague in some of their statements. If you have any more insight, I would greatly appreciate it! Thank you.

Unfortunately, I do not. I have reached out to them many times but have been unable to get any clear information.

A great resource for learning about everything essential oils is usingeossafely.com . Or you can google using essential oils safely…it’s a website created by a Certified Clinical Aromatherapist (Leah Harris Jacobson) – she shares everything from which oils are safe to use with children (and at which ages), what oils to use for different needs, how to properly dilute, etc., etc. It’s an encyclopedia of information! Thanks to that site, I learned that cats systems do not do well with essential oils…
