The Ultimate Guide to Cruelty-Free Mascara!
When it comes to finding a cruelty-free mascara, a lot of people need some help. For many people who transition to a cruelty-free beauty routine, finding a good cruelty-free mascara can be one of the hardest parts. Many of us are picky about mascara and know what we want from a formula. Some of us want length, others volume, maybe a mascara that targets the lower lashline, or something that’s water-resistant. Figuring out which cruelty-free mascaras to try? That can be a totally different story.
There are so many cruelty-free mascaras out there and that’s why I decided to create this cruelty-free mascara guide. There are so many cruelty-free mascaras out there to try. All the brands listed do make vegan mascaras but may make some non-vegan mascaras as well. Where I can I mention specific vegan formulas.
This is the most recent update of a post I originally published on March 4, 2015.
I get a lot of people asking what my favorite cruelty-free and vegan mascaras are. I have tried TONS and, to be honest, a lot of them are just so-so. There are several that I have used over and over and purchased several times. I wanted to give these special formulas their own video for those interested.

Have you tried MILK’s Kush mascara? I’m curious about your optic it. 🙂
I haven’t. 🙂
Can people give ideas for smudgeproof/waterproof mascara. I swear I have the runniest eyes.
Thank for for this! Being relatively new to cruelty free, I always get intimidated in shops trying to figure out what I can/can’t use! It’s fab to have a handy guide.
The Lily Lolo is my all time favorite mascara – it’s like BTS but not as chunky and flakey, and I really love the ingredients 🙂
My favorite is theBalm -What’s Your Type – Tall, Dark, and Handsome!
Hi, I recently went cruelty-free and am looking for a good mascara that holds its curl (I wear glasses) and isn’t too expensive. I’ve tried a few different brands since I’ve switched, but nothing has held a curl very well. I was hoping you would have some recommendations.
Lush Eyes Right mascara is a great option!
Have you checked their maracuja formula? Pretty sure it’s vegan. I certainly hope so since my holy grail Glam Natural brand doesn’t seem to be in business anymore. I’m running out of brands to try that don’t dry out in a week or make my eyes burn!
I’m a little confused about the China issue. Wet N Wild is made in China, as is ELF and Eco Tools…etc. So those products are not sold in China, thus requiring animal testing? China doesn’t require testing for products produced there, just sold there?
Sorry, I just found the articles reference my question. Disregard.
That’s correct! Animal testing is only required on items sold there, but not made there.
From my understanding, it’s only the cosmetic products that are sold in brick’n’mortar stores within China that require animal testing. There are some cruelty-free cosmetics companies that allow shipping to China from their online store, but do not sell their products in the physical stores in China, and therefore do not require animal testing. (That’s my understanding – please correct if I’m wrong, thanks!)
I thought that the Fergie Turn Up the Volume Mascara contained beeswax. Everywhere I’ve seen the ingredients for it online say it has beeswax.
I just checked and it sounds like they may have changed it. It did not used to list beeswax, but now that I look other places I am seeing it listed in the ingredient lists. What a bummer! I removed it from the list. 🙂 I’ve noticed that the Wet’n’Wild vegan list in their FAQ includes items that have beeswax, but not all do. It’s a bit confusing.
Yeah I had a bit of a hard time maneuvering through their vegan list at first. I like their MegaLength Mascara (which I think is vegan in the non waterproof formula)
