The Ultimate Guide to Cruelty-Free Mascara!

The Ultimate Guide to Cruelty-Free Mascara!

When it comes to finding a cruelty-free mascara, a lot of people need some help. For many people who transition to a cruelty-free beauty routine, finding a good cruelty-free mascara can be one of the hardest parts. Many of us are picky about mascara and know what we want from a formula. Some of us want length, others volume, maybe a mascara that targets the lower lashline, or something that’s water-resistant. Figuring out which cruelty-free mascaras to try? That can be a totally different story.

There are so many cruelty-free mascaras out there and that’s why I decided to create this cruelty-free mascara guide. There are so many cruelty-free mascaras out there to try. All the brands listed do make vegan mascaras but may make some non-vegan mascaras as well. Where I can I mention specific vegan formulas.

This is the most recent update of a post I originally published on March 4, 2015.

I get a lot of people asking what my favorite cruelty-free and vegan mascaras are. I have tried TONS and, to be honest, a lot of them are just so-so. There are several that I have used over and over and purchased several times. I wanted to give these special formulas their own video for those interested.

My Favorite Cruelty-Free Mascaras are:

The following brands are all cruelty-free and offer some vegan mascara formulas. While they are cruelty-free, some of these brands offer mascaras or other products that are not vegan. This list will be kept as up to date as possible but brands may change formulas, so be sure to read ingredients before purchasing. Any mascaras suggested next to the brand names are not only cruelty-free but also vegan. Brands that are 100% vegan are noted.

  1. I’ve noticed that Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara is no longer listed among vegan products on the TF website. They do have a different mascara listed as vegan.

    1. Hi Cyndi,

This mascara actually has never been listed there, and that section has not been updated in a very long time. They currently don’t include any products released in the past couple of years on there but many are vegan. 🙂 Their customer service and PR teams both have updated lists. I hope this helps!

      1. Thanks, Tashina. I stopped buying from TF because I never saw a list other than on the FAQ, and, as you implied, it’s fairly useless.

        1. You’re welcome! If you email their customer service team, they are usually really responsive and on top of things. I’ve found them to be a great resource for finding out what new products are vegan.

  2. I was just lamenting about the lack of vegan mascara options on my Instagram last week! I liked the Glam Natural sample I got a long time ago in a Vegan Cuts Beauty Box and the Lily Lolo mascara I received in last month’s Petit Vour box, but I haven’t tried the new Pacifica formula yet. I think I’ll like the applicator brush a lot more on it if nothing else!

  3. I am a hardcore loyal to Pacifica! I love, love, LOVE their Supernova mineral mascara and it is the ONLY one I have ever used since going vegan. It is also the only mascara I have ever used in my life that does not bother my eyes and stays in place from morning to night. Seriously, I sometimes have to be up at 4:30am for work and by the time I hit the shower at 9:30pm that evening, ITS STILL THERE. Just incredible!

  4. Oh man the Beauty Without Cruelty mascara was the WORST I’ve ever used. I contacted them to try and see if it was maybe a bad/old batch and never heard back. There were crumbles falling off the wand the first time I opened it!

    1. Hi Mally,

Thanks for suggesting CATRICE! We have reached out to them and they will be added to the Pending Brands list. Please check back for updates to see where they move to on the list. This will depend on how fast I hear back from them, but they will be included in future weekly update posts about the brands list. Have a great day!

  5. I use the Pacifica mascara in Supernova, and I really like the volume it builds. I think they recently changed their packaging to look more like larger/standard mascaras and included a tiny % more product. The brush did not change from the older, smaller tube packaging (in case anyone wondered).

    1. I’m not sure which items from Gosh are vegan. They are cruelty free and said that a lot of their products do not contain animal ingredients, but they were unable to provide me with a list of animal and animal-derived ingredients in their products.

    1. The Jordana mascara’s all contain some ingredients that may or may not come from animals. Jordana has not yet been transparent about which of their products are vegan (though I know they are working on it). Since I cannot be sure which mascaras are vegan, I did not feel comfortable adding them to this list. 🙂

      1. Jordana manufacters in China. All make up and beauty products sold in China are required by law to be tested in animals.

As a rule of thumb: if it sells in China is not cruelty free.
