What’s the difference between cruelty-free and vegan? Let’s get into it!

These two phrases often get used interchangeably. And, oddly enough, neither has a set definition.

What does cruelty-free mean?

Cruelty-free means that there is no animal testing involved at any point. This extends from the ingredients that are used in the products, the formulas, during production, and the final product. It even includes once the final product is for sale in stores.

A brand can make cruelty-free products and not be vegan. Animal by-products and animal-derived ingredients can be used and a brand can say that they are cruelty-free.

What does vegan mean?

Vegan means that no animal by-products or animal-derived ingredients are used in the product. What are animal-derived ingredients? These are things like carmine, beeswax, honey, lanolin, silk, keratin, and some forms of collagen. These are all commonly used in makeup, skincare, and hair products.

A brand can make vegan makeup products and still test on animals.

What if a brand is cruelty-free and vegan?

This means there is no animal testing involved at any point and the brand does not use any animal by-products or animal-derived ingredients in any of its products.

Can you trust the Sephora vegan filter?

Unfortunately not. Sephoras’s website has filters that you can search by to narrow down your shopping. Some people use the Sephora keyword searches for “cruelty-free” or “vegan” to find brands to shop from or products to purchase. It’s not reliable for accurate information.

Brands that test on animals are listed as cruelty-free and some products that contain animal ingredients are listed as vegan. If you’re curious about vegan options from a cruelty-free brand, there are lots of vegan product lists here on Logical Harmony.

Sephora Vegan Product Filter

Sephora now has a vegan products page to list only vegan beauty products. It does not claim that the brands are cruelty-free nor does it claim that the brands make only vegan products. In fact, the only definition Sephora gives of their criteria is the tagline in the header image – “High-performance formulas with no animal products or by-products“.

It’s important to point out that vegan and cruelty-free don’t necessarily go hand-in-hand. This page does not make that clear for the average consumer. A brand can be cruelty-free and use animal ingredients or animal by-products. There are longer definitions of what each of these terms generally mean higher up in this post.

Oddly enough, some of the products listed are not actually vegan-friendly. There are products listed that contain animal by-products and animal-derived ingredients like carmine and more.

Some are made by brands that are not cruelty-free. For example, products from Clinique, Gucci, NARS, and Nudestix are included on this page but these brands are not considered cruelty-free. If you are not concerned with animal testing and just the ingredients that are used, this might not be a big deal to you.

However many people assume vegan is the same as cruelty-free when it is not.

This could lead people to think brands do not test on animals when they actually do. It could make people think vegan beauty is tricky and confusing by suggesting products that are not actually vegan.

One of my main goals with Logical Harmony is to take the guesswork out of cruelty-free and make it simple for you. Pages like this on store websites motivate me with that goal and make me want to create more cruelty-free shopping guides and vegan product lists in order to do just that. If you’re curious about vegan options from a cruelty-free brand, there are lots of vegan product lists here on Logical Harmony.

For those who decide to not purchase items from Sephora, you can always go into the store to look at the cruelty-free brands and products in person, take home samples, and then order online directly from the brand itself.
