Laura Mercier is Now Owned by Shiseido

The cruelty-free status of Laura Mercier is debated in the cruelty-free community. While I do not consider them to be a cruelty-free brand, I know that a lot of people do. For this reason, I wanted to share the news that this week it was announced that Shiseido is set to acquire Laura Mercier.

For those who do consider Laura Mercier to be cruelty-free but wish to avoid brands with a parent company who tests on animals, this will impact you because Shiseido is not cruelty-free.

“We are thrilled to welcome Laura Mercier and RéVive to the Shiseido family. Both brands have unique viewpoints, fast-growing and loyal customer bases, and the same focus on innovation that defines all of Shiseido brands,” said Marc Rey, President and CEO of Shiseido Americas. “Laura Mercier’s classic French elegance and artistry perfectly complements the unique styles and offerings of NARS, bareMinerals, Shiseido and Clé de Peau Beauté to create a formidable portfolio of prestige make-up. And RéVive, with its proven restorative formulas and use of Nobel prize-winning technologies, is a terrific fit with Shiseido’s skin care heritage. Shiseido is well positioned to generate significant value from this attractive acquisition opportunity, and we are energized to use our regional and global resources to take these brands to the next level and further strengthen our overall position in the marketplace.”

It’s unclear if being purchased by Shiseido will have any impact on the animal testing stance of Laura Mercier. Shiseido owns several cruelty-free brands like NARS and bareMinerals.

  1. ahhh, this really sucks. i was looking forward to purchasing some laura mercier products in the future, but now i definitely won’t be. very disappointing.

  2. I recently went into a Bare Minerals store. They told me that Bare Minerals partnered with Shiseido on their new skin care line. What does this mean for Bare Minerals? Thank you.

  3. Hm, wasn’t Laura Mercier owned by Estee Lauder before? 😮 I’m thinking that now they might become cruelty-free (according to my own standards), because all EL companies animal test “where required by law” while not all Shiseido subsidaries does, and LM atleast doesn’t sell in China!
